10/5/12 - 16/5/12 Is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Week

Studies by NSW Department of Health indicate that 2.9% of people report having been diagnosed with a chemical sensitivity. Symptoms can include headaches, blocked or runny nose, nausea and fatigue.

In pharmacy, proprietary medications and treatments don’t always suit everyone. Compounding allows our pharmacists to tailor make products to your specific needs, avoiding particular chemicals, preservatives, colours and fragrances. To further discuss your specific needs, please contact our pharmacists.

April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day

Both Autism and Asperger's syndrome are increasingly referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorders. They can cause delays in typical development of a child across a broad range of areas. Asperger's syndrome is at the milder end of this spectrum. Autism can impact on a persons ability to communicate and relate to others. These disorders begin in early childhood and continue through to adult life.

It has been suggested that colours, flavours and preservatives in medicines can aggravate the symptoms of Asperger’s syndrome. Compounding pharmacy can provide treatment options for patients needing medication without certain colours, flavours and preservatives. Please contact our pharmacists for more information

Tuesday 13th March - Tuesday 20th March is Coeliac Awareness week

Coeliac disease affects approximately 1 in 100 Australians however it has been suggested that 75 per cent currently remain undiagnosed. Coeliac disease makes it difficult for the body to properly absorb nutrients from foods.

It has been suggested that undiagnosed celiac disease may actually be part of the process that triggers an underlying autoimmune disease. Among autoimmune disorders, increased prevalence of celiac disease has been found in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease. Researchers have found that the various antibodies that indicate celiac disease - organ-specific autoantibodies (i.e., thyroid antibodies) -- will disappear after 3 to 6 months of a gluten-free diet.

The Pharmacists at Wickham House Compounding Pharmacy are experienced in compounding medications for thyroid disorders as well as medications that are free from gluten. Please contact our pharmacists for more information.

Topical prevention of stretchmarks

Stretch marks are a form of scarring on the skin caused by the tearing of the dermis, which over time can diminish but not completely disappear. These marks are often the result of overstretching of the skin as seen in pregnancy and rapid weight gain. Although this common dermatologic condition rarely causes any medical problems, the physical appearance of stretch marks may be a problem to some. Wickham House Compounding Pharmacy has developed a stretch mark cream that may be of assistance in preventing stretch marks. Please contact our pharmacists for more information.

Vitamin D supplementation - An update

(from US Pharmacist © 2010 Jobson Publishing)

An estimated 1 billion people worldwide, across all ethnicities and age groups, have a vitamin D deficiency.

This is mostly attributable to people getting less sun exposure because of climate, lifestyle, and concerns about skin cancer.

The 1997 Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) values for vitamin D, initially established to prevent rickets and osteomalacia, are considered too low by many experts. Current studies suggest that we may need more vitamin D than presently recommended to prevent chronic disease.

Emerging research supports the possible role of vitamin D in protecting against cancer, heart disease, fractures and falls, autoimmune diseases, influenza, type 2 diabetes, and depression.

Many health care providers have increased their recommendations for vitamin D supplementation and as a result, more patients are asking their pharmacists about supplementing with

vitamin D.

February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Each year in February Ovarian Cancer Australia runs a national Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month campaign to highlight the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is a disease where some of the cells in one or both ovaries start to grow abnormally and develop into cancer. The four most common symptoms of ovarian cancer include:

Abdominal or pelvic pain.

Increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bloating.

Needing to urinate often or urgently.

Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly.

Treatment for ovarian cancer usually involves a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Working with your doctor, our compounding pharmacists may be able to suggest alternatives which may be helpful in dealing with the side effects of your treatment. For more information about compounded options, please contact our pharmacists.

A customised approach to treating acne

Acne typically appears on the face, neck, chest and back and can be difficult to treat successfully. Depending on the severity, acne can have a significant impact of the sufferer’s emotional wellbeing. Recent studies have compared the use of topical niacinamide (vitamin B3) with topical clindamycin (an antibiotic). The results showed comparable efficacy between the two, without the risk of antibiotic resistance with the niacinamide cream. Wickham House Compounding Pharmacy is able to compound a light, non greasy moisturising cream containing niacinamide, vitamin C and other soothing ingredients, which may be of benefit for our customers suffering from acne.

Combining ibuprofen with antifungal drugs can improve treatment outcomes

Recent studies suggest that combining ibuprofen topically with some antifungal agents can result in improved antifungal activity. The addition of ibuprofen to our antifungal creams also acts to reduce the inflammation often associated with fungal skin infections. The combination of ibuprofen, antifungal medication and tea tree oil, acts effectively to treat fungal skin infections and sooth the uncomfortable symptoms at the same time. If you would like to discuss your treatment options for this common type of skin infection, please contact our pharmacists or call toll free on 1300 667827.
